Another Heaven

Written and directed by Joji Iida

Suspenseful police thriller with both supernatural and science fiction elements. The police are pursuing a strange killer who removes brains and body parts in interesting ways. The tension builds as the mystery grows. The investigators begin to realize that this is no oridinary serial murder case and they begin to turn to the supernatural for an explanation for the strange things they uncover. It has, however, a rather unsatisfactory conclusion. But it's fun along the way, so this movie has a high fun quotient.

Joji "George" Iida pays tribute to any number of recognizable films and probably a number not known in the West. He keeps the action moving and the plot unraveling slowly. The filming and production values are high and the story is involving.

Another Heaven falls down in the key category of originality. Fans of Japanese horror or even fans of horror films in general, have seen all this before: puzzling investigations, gory crime scenes, mysterious killers, tough cops, and a few good shocks. It's a movie to be enjoyed and forgotten. It doesn't add anything new to the horror film genre. Jaded viewers like myself need to look elsewhere for the new thrill, the unique sensation of a new aspect of horror.
