Directed by Toyou Ashida
This anime is mainly of interest because of its original author and art designer. It is based on the novel by the same name by noted horror writer, Hideyuki Kikuchi. His work includes A Wind Named Amnesia, Wicked City, Dark Side Blues, and Demon City Shinjuku, not to mention at least 11 more novels in the Vampire Hunter D series. The art designer was Yoshitaka Amano, noted artist, whose art nouveau works are known throughout the world.
This original 1985 anime seems tame by modern standards and unlike Angel's Egg, Amano's intricate designs were greatly simplified. His orignal designs can be seen in various collections of his artwork.
Still, this anime is quite watchable and has an interesting twist at the end that may surprise most viewers. The story takes place in the distant future when vampires rule the earth and humans are a repressed minority. Doris, as the heroine is called in the US anime, is bitten by a vampire and then kidnapped by one. Her only hope is the mysterious stranger, known simply as Vampire Hunter D.
