Not usually seen as a horror film, Akira contains an extraordinary number of horror elements: frightening hallucinations, apocalyptic devastion, body mutation and psychic powers. This landmark of Japanese animation is distillation of literally hundreds of pages of manga and it confusing to the unimtiated. It's punctuated with moments of genuine horror.
